TN Trip

For our Labor Day holiday Bart and I decided to visit his family in Tennessee. We drove up on Friday and arrived around dinner time. Saturday we biked a little in their trails on their land and helped with the yard work. Sunday, Bart, Sterlynn, and I decided to drive to Virginia to go on a bike trail that I'd heard about from co-workers. It's called the Virginia Creeper Trail and is part of a rails-to-trails project. The trail is where the railroad used to run. There are even two old railroad stations, where passengers used to wait for the train, on the trail as stops where bikers can learn about the history of the trail and get snacks. We biked approximately 17 miles and had a great time. The trail is on a decline, so it's an easy ride.

On Monday, Sterlynn and I hiked up to Margarette Falls. I've been to TN many times, but this is the first I'd ever heard of this, so I knew I wanted to go. Also, this trip I vowed to keep active and having Sterl around was a great help with my goal.

RIP Jack Oliver Bartlett

My grandpa, my hero, passed away on Friday, September 3, 2010. Bart and I were on the way to Tennessee to visit his parents when we got the news. We stayed in TN for a few days, which I'll post about soon, and ended up coming home early. I didn't get to spend as much time with my grandfather growing up as I wanted to, but the time I did spend with him I will always chrerish. From "spagetti's" while fishing to stories from his life, I will never forget the many things he taught me. His obituary is below.

Jack Oliver Bartlett, 77, of Bostwick, Fla., passed away Friday, September 3, 2010, at his home. The outstanding and courageous battle he fought for so long was for his family, whom he adored with all of his heart.

He was born June 10, 1933, in Asheville, N.C., and proudly served in the U.S. Air Force for seven years. He went on to become an entrepreneur, owning several service stations in the Jacksonville area and proudly served many years as a brother with Masonic Lodge No. 309 F&AM in Jacksonville.

He raised his family in St. Augustine and retired with his wife of Bostwick, enjoying much of his free time golfing and fishing with family and friends.

Jack will be missed by each and every person who had the pleasure of knowing him, but we know that he is now with his God, along with his father and mother, Lloyd and Hilda Bartlett, and his son, Jack Oliver, Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Carolyn Bartlett of Bostwick; daughters Debra Garza of Jacksonville, Diana Savage of St. Augustine and LouLane Polla of Elkton; three grandchildren, Vickie Lee of St. Johns, Fla, and Jennifer Clendenin and John Tipton, both of St. Augustine; and one great-grandchild.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept 9, 2010, at the Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka, with Brother David Eddins officiating. The Masonic Lodge will conduct funeral honors and the U.S. Air Force will conduct military honors. Friends may call from 12 to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Johnson-Overturn Funeral Home in Palatka.

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas...

And I almost got it! The week after graduation Bart and I set off for Tennessee to spend the holiday with his family. We were so excited because his mom, dad, sister, Nana, and Gramp would be joining us this year. Weather reports kept telling us that snow was falling for a few days before we planned on leaving and I was so excited! Tinkerbell had her first experience with snow and I got to make my first snowman. Bart showed me with his expertise how to fashion a great snowman and he made a snowdog too! We had a great time because the snow was on the ground when we got there and made a speedy exit a day or two later. I was so worried about driving around on snowy roads and in the end had nothing to worry about. Here are some pictures of our fun at Christmas.

Remodeling, Turkey, and Graduation... Oh, my!

My last post was October and it's now January, so you can see how we've been plenty busy during these past months. In October Bart returned home from West Africa. He went to Abidjan, Coast of Ivory; Douala, Cameroon; Monrovia, Liberia and Freetown, Sierra Lione. To my surprise he said these places are worse than East Africa, but then again I don't think he was factoring in the pirates that regularly roam the East Africa coast. Anyways, he made it home in time for Halloween and to watch the Gators eat some Seminole for dinner!

When Bart returned home it was time, yet again, for the remodeling of our house to continue. As he began the daunting and challenging job of remodeling our existing laundry/storage room into our newly bathroom/ laundry room he needed to remove the existing water heater. I was on the laptop in the bedroom next door when I hear water running down the wall. I'm thinking, "This can't be good" and call to Bart to see what happened. When I heard no reply I quickly got up and walked down the hall just in time to see Bart running out of the back door at top speed! He was running out to turn off the water. As I looked in the room this is what I saw.

Yes, the water made it all the way up to the ceiling! So far the rest of the remodeling has been uneventful and he's done an amazing job! I'm always in awe of Bart's wonderful work. This room has been especially challenging because of all of the items within such a small space. Currently he's working on tiling the floor and shower wall. The storm today put a hold on cutting tile so I'm hoping tomorrow that will be started. After that is the vanity and toilet installation along with the sink and countertop. Thanksgiving this year was fun and I always love that we're able to get together with our whole family for these occasions. This year I was giving thanks that Bart was home with me for the holidays and that my grandfather, who had some health issues earlier this year was still with us. I am definitely blessed!

December was a busy and eventful month. I graduated from Flagler College with my Bachelor's in Science finally!!!!! Wohoo!!! Bart organized a small party at our house after graduation. Family and a few friends joined us and we had a great time together. I don't know how we fit all of those people in our house, but it worked and was cozy and Igot to show off our Christmas decorations. That was nice since we rarely have over that many people, especially around the holidays. Below are pics of some of my classmates having a drinks after my last final exam... man, that was an awesome feeling!!! I'm going to miss my classmates the most. I hope we all keep in contact.

Time Flies!

Wow! I know it's been a while since my last post, so I figured I'd update on what's been going on. In August we were pretty busy with preparing for Bart returning to work. Before he left there was lots to do and friends & family to visit. We had our fabulous Trash the Dress session with the amazing Corinna Hoffman. We had a blast and the pictures, of course, came out beautiful. It was an experimental session, with it being at night, but the pics were great and Corinna is so much fun to hang out with! We also had a tough time in July/ August with my grandfather sick in the hospital and by the grace of God he is now 100 times better than before! We had lots of great family time visiting him and sticking by each other while he got through this. The doctors were wonderful and we had lots of prayer from our family and friends.


Also before Bart went off to work, we had the pleasure of our friends, Katie and Jeremie, coming down to visit. We met them on our Jamaican honeymoon and became instant friends. And how convenient that they happen to live in FL too! It's so nice to find a couple that we just "click" with. We look forward to many more fun weekends with them! The weekend after their visit, Bart left for West Africa, which is much better than his usual Oman or East Africa. I also started classes for Flagler's fall session the date he left. Convenient for me because it's much easier for me when he's away if I'm occupied and busy with school. September has flown by and I finished up Fall Session A and am currently in Fall Session B. December 12th is graduation, and I'm so ready!

Friends, Fun and Fireworks!

This 4th of July is our first as a married couple. *awe* Last year we were in TN visiting family, so this year since we were home Bart and I wanted to host some festivities at our house. We invited some of our closest friends and had a great cookout. Bart's the GRILLMASTER! He made such great food and had a pretty good time doing it! After the cookout we all grabbed chairs and walked downtown for the fireworks. It was a great time! Pics below... :)

2nd Mate to Chief Mate, then Captain...

Bart has definitely had a very busy couple of weeks. He's been down in Dania Beach studying for his Chief Mate/ Captain test. Two weeks of studying and 3 days of testing. He had nine modules to complete and on Wednesday I got the call that he just completed the test and PASSED! I'm so proud of my husband and so excited for his accomplishments! As soon as his license comes in the mail he'll be able to go back to work. I'll definitely miss him. After a year of time at sea with his C/M license he'll be able to upgrade his documents to Captain! Did I mention how proud of him I am? :-)

During the three weeks he was gone I was pretty busy myself. I decided to surprise Bart the first weekend and went down to visit him after getting off of work on Friday early. We had a great weekend together and saw some friends while down there too. The rest of my time at home I juggled working with my own sprucing up of the house. I re-painted the bathroom, put together a cabinet for above the toilet, and re-tiled the floor. It's a much nicer area now that I'll be able to live with until we actually remodel that room. I also re-painted the dining room. For those of you who know I've never warmed up to the green in there, so now it's a nice neutral (oatmeal on top, antique on bottom) room. Bart was very appreciative of my efforts and was very impressed, especially with the bathroom, with my work.

Wedding and Honeymoon

We had a wonderful wedding May 9, 2009 in downtown St. Augustine. Everything was perfect and we had a great time! In the meantime... we have a cute picture (above) that our friends, Hope and Jason captured after we were pronounced man and wife, Mr and Mrs Bart Clendenin!!! YAY!

After the beautiful wedding and reception, we departed for our honeymoon on May 11th to Negril, Jamaica. We had an perfect honeymoon there. The resort exceeded our expectations, the people were so warm and friendly, and we even made new friends. We were so sad to leave and Bart even thought of throwing fit (like when he was a kid) before leaving! ;-)

Our Ski & TN Trip

In the midst of wedding planning, work and college I was happy to take a break and travel to Tennessee to visit my future in-laws. Bart and I drove up on a Friday and came back on the following Sunday... a full 7 days of rest, relaxation and fun! While we were up there we spent time with the horses, the Clendenin puppy clan, and Bart's parents and sister. We even took time to travel over to Banner Elk, NC and try out my skiing skills. Bart's a very good instructor and I learned how to do all I needed in 4 trips on the bunny slopes. I did so well on the green run (beginner) that Bart decided I should try out the blue run (intermediate). That didn't work out so well, but I ended up perfecting the green run and had a lot of fun doing it! Here are a couple of pictures from our trip. :)

Christmas, Christmas!

Though Bart wasn't able to join me for Christmas this year (he's crossing the Atlantic ocean right now!), I had a great time with my family and friends. This year has been really great as I reflect on all of the busy-ness, accomplishments and blessings. Next year will be just as busy with the upcoming shower, bachelorette party, and wedding... not to mention spring semester at Flagler and all of the planning and studying that accompanies the previously mentioned things. It's all exciting and I love the changes and fast pace that life offers right now. For now, I'll leave you all with a link to the pictures from Christmas Day. The Latest Happenings

I haven't posted anything since October, so I thought I'd update everyone on what's been going on. Bart's been out of town since the end of Sept. He will have traveled around the world by the time he's back home. He's on his way back across the Atlantic right now and hopefully will be home soon.

All wedding plans are right on track and I really have everything decided that's important. I can't wait for all of our family and closest friends to be with us on our exciting day!

I'm officially over the hump with my Flagler degree and have only spring (starting January 5th) and next fall before I'm finished with my degree. Wohoo! It's been difficult to do both work and college full time, but Bart's so amazing and supportive (especially sharing me with the classes and my study time).

Hopefully by now everyone has received Save the Date cards for our wedding, and ladies, be sure to keep your eye out for shower invites too... comming soon!

I hope that everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a safe, healthy and prosperous New Year!!

Praise report!!! (Thanks, God for answering our prayers!)

In June I posted requests for prayer for the Sharpe family. Jason and Hope's son, Jaylon, was born 3 months early. Hope sends out family updates, so I've posted the excerpt about Jaylon that she wrote below. Her update was a lot longer, but I think this convey's how God has come through for the Sharpe family. They are such an inspiration and I'm glad they are a part of my life!

"Jaylon is 7 months old, and weighs 12 pounds 13 ounces. He is supposed to be only 4 months old and he acts more like a 4 month old than a 7 month old. He is growing at a good pace, and is right on par with other 4 month olds. He’s still a little small for a 7 month old, but the doctor is pleased with his growth because he’s on a steady path up! ... Jaylon has been eating like a champ too! … Jaylon also rolls over more consistently, and kicks more like he’s trying to move on his belly. He can do a 360 on his belly just by wiggling! When I sit him up, he pulls himself forward so he sits up on his own. Sometimes he leans a little too far and ends up almost between his toes! When I lay him in my arms to feed him, he’ll try to sit up more cause he wants that bottle “right now!” He reminds me a lot of Gavin by how strong he is. My little preemies amaze me in how strong they are and how far they’ve come! God really gives the littlest ones a lot of strength and determination! ... Jaylon has been a blessing to each of us in his own special way. He completes our family and gives us joy that we never expected to receive. God has a special plan for him, and I am looking forward to watching him grow into the man God intends him to be."

One week and three days ago, Parker Joon Lee was born and he's pure perfection!! I'm sure everyone feels this way, but he's the cutest little angel ever! In the spirit of bragging about my little nephew I've included some pictures. No, Vickie and I aren't sisters, but we should've been and as far as this little man is concerned I'll be his Aunt. :)

Saturday was Vickie and Emory's baby shower. We had quite a crowd and everyone had a great time. We're engaged!!

Here's the story...

We went out for a picnic to Washington Oaks State Park today and took Tinkerbell with us. We had a great time bike riding and having lunch, but we couldn't go into the garden because they don't allow dogs in there. (He was going to ask in the garden.) After biking and lunch we came home and Bart took Tinkerbell to the back yard. I went to the back yard to let them in through the sliding glass door and Bart was sitting on our garden bench with Tinkerbell. He asked me to come out and see something and put Tink down to come up to me. She had a little note tied around her neck with a bow. When I bent down to read it read this:

(front)Mommy, The daddy wants to know...
(inside)Will you marry him?
(back) I hope you say yes! (signed with a little paw and Tink's name)

Then he got down on his knees, stood me up and asked me to marry him. I, of course, cried and said yes! And then he put the most beautiful ring on my finger.

He's such an amazing man and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with him!!!

Goodbye, Grandpa Savage

Sunday morning shortly after 1am my Grandpa Savage passed away. He was given 6 months to live around 2 years ago, so we have all been blessed to have him longer than expected. My mother has been married to Russell, my step-dad, since 1983. In that time I've never heard anything but positive words about my grandfather. He's had a wonderful life and family. And as my dad has said, "He was a wonderful father." I know this has been hard on my Nana, Uncle Warren, and my dad. I only hope that I can be a sorce of comfort as the days go by and they need someone to listen, someone to cheer them up, or a shoulder to cry on. Thank you to all of my friends and family for your prayers.

Johnny's Journey to Victory

This is an excerpt from Johnny's Blog. Please join us in prayer for Scarlett's father and family as they go through this painful and difficult time. The link for his blog is in my links to the right.

"Today the oncologist told us that Johnny's lung cancer has been diagnosed malignant non-small cell lung cancer in stage 4. He recommends chemo therapy (which will not cure - only relieve symptoms and reduced the tumour.....it has entered the bloodstream and spread to the adrenal glands.)He will start tomorrow afternoon and every three weeks for 3 sessions then evaluate progress after that with a pet scan. The prognosis is 6-12 months with the chemo and 2-3 months left without treatment.

This is a very difficult day for Johnny, Scarlett, and me, spent in tears of shock and unbelief. We have not called anyone yet except Mom and Dad to tell the news. We want to wait. Today we rallied together as we have weathered every other past crisis in our lives and spent alot of time hugging and praying as we strengthen our faith. We have cried our eyes out together and allowed ourselves a one day pity party. Now we are ready to face this giant and give the ole devil a boot in his pants!"
